Aims of the session
Some say that in an era of Big Data, the traditional ways of establishing the legitimacy of statements is no longer relevant.
The Director General for Regulation at the UK Statistics Authority and head of its Office for Statistics Regulation, Ed Humpherson, argued instead that the old friends of trustworthiness, quality and value remain the bedrock of public confidence. He's involved in overseeing the quality of official statistics produced by Government, and for stepping in to comment on the way statistics are used in public discourse. The Authority has recently been involved in high profile uses of statistics, including relating to Brexit and to migration.
The event also featured the following University of Exeter researchers who will speak about their experiences of Big Data and data quality:
- Professor Sabina Leonelli, Egenis
- Professor Oliver James, Politics
- Professor Richard Everson, Computer Science
- Professor Susan Banducci, Q-Step, Politics
