Project history
:
The GLIS descriptors were developed by a team from the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (FAO), including consultants with long-term experience developing the Bioversity International crop descriptor lists and the FAO/Bioversity International Multi-Crop Passport Descriptors (MCPDs). Two consultations were conducted in 2015 to determine the minimum essential descriptors for identifying a PGRFA sample: A global survey of contracting parties and stakeholders to the Treaty followed by an expert focus group. Participants in the survey were asked to comment on a proposed set of descriptors drawn primarily from a comparison between the Multi-Crop Passport Descriptor list and relevant descriptors from the International Crop Information System. The results of the survey were assessed and further recommendations made by the focus group of 15 experts. Version 1 was published in 2016, with versions 2 and 2.1 published in 2017.
